What is an Implant?

An Implant is the most modern and closest replacement for a natural tooth. At Quayside Dental, we have placed over 500 implants in the last 3 years alone. We only use premium quality Dental Implants made from the highest grade (type IV) titanium. This will function as the root of the missing tooth but at no stage of the treatment will you be left without teeth.

The Implants are placed into the jaw to act and function like the root of your missing tooth. The implant is completed with a crown, bridge or denture on top to replicate the appearance of natural teeth.

How long will it take to complete?

It usually takes between 3 and 6 months depending on each individual case. However, some cases may take longer if extra procedures are required.

Do I have one implant for each missing tooth?

2 missing teeth side by side can be replaced with 1 Implant. A full lower arch can be replaced with as little as 2 Implants and a full upper arch with as little as 4 Implants.

Do Implants hurt?

Patients who have this treatment done refer to it as having the same sensation as if you were having fillings placed. If you are anxious about treatment we can provide IV sedation which is given by a registered sedationist.

How much do Implants cost?

Dental Implants start from £1936 but depend on each individual case.

Would I be suitable for an Implant?

If you are healthy enough to have a tooth extracted you could have an implant. At Quayside Dental we can evaluate various factors to determine if dental implants are the solution for you. Factors taken in to consideration will include health conditions, risk factors e.g. smoking and gum disease.

How successful are Dental implants?

Dental Implants are one of the most sucessful treatments. One study in the lower jaw showed 94% of implants were still successful after 14 years.

Help to Preserve Natural Appearance

Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. And because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent. Dental implants help to prevent oral bone loss preserving your natural facial contours.

Improved Speech

With poor-fitting dentures, the teeth can slip within the mouth causing you to mumble or slur your words. Dental implants allow you to speak without the worry that your teeth might slip.

Removable dentures are just that; removable. Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing your dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep your dentures in place.

Easier Eating

Loose dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental Implants function like your own teeth giving you back the ability to eat all your favourite foods and enjoy wide varieties of different foods. They are also easy to care for - like a natural tooth.

Prevents Bone Loss

Implants help maintain bone volume and your facial profile compared to dentures, crowns and bridges where bone can continue to be lost.

May Give You Greater Self Confidence

Dental implants can give you back your smile and help you feel better about yourself. Because dental implants look and feel like natural teeth with no need for messy adhesives, you will no longer have those uncomfortable moments you can experience with unsupported dentures. This will give you increased confidence in your smile.

Limits the Damage to Healthy Adjacent Teeth

Dental Implant restorations normally do not require modification of healthy surrounding teeth as may occur with bridge or dentures. They don't require reducing other teeth, as a tooth-support bridge does because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant and more of your own teeth are left intact, improving your long-term oral health.

Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene.

Improved Comfort

Because they become part of you, implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures.

Long Lasting Solution

Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many Implants could last a lifetime compared to crowns/bridges which can last 7-10 years and dentures which may require on-going adjustments, relining and replacements.

I enjoy working with people to help improve their smile and self-confidence. I believe the greatest satisfaction as a dentist comes through helping patients understand what’s possible and working with them to achieve their aims, whether it’s a simple filling or restoring their smile. I always involve patients in decisions about their treatment so that they feel relaxed and empowered about the choices they make.

To enhance my knowledge with the latest advances in dentistry I have been to Fort Lauderdale, Chicago and Verona as well as completing an intensive year course in the world renowned Eastman Dental Institute in London. I have a special interest in dental implants and in 2012 received my qualification in Dental Implants at the Royal College of Surgeons London. Over the years I have developed a loyal referral base of over 70 dentists.

I cannot stop smiling since Peter and his team restored my smile. I never thought I would smile BIG again. Peter and his team especially Rebecca and Laura 'Sharon the gentlest hygienist I have ever had' they are all wonderful. I feel they have been with me every step of the way during my procedure and follow up treatment. I truly believe they all genuinely care about the outcome of my implant procedure. The reception staff are always courteous and friendly and make me feel welcome.

Two points that make this team outstanding is

1. Peter opened the surgery on a Saturday to sort a small problem that I felt could have waited till Monday.
2. Laura presented me with a lovely bright red lipstick after I had mentioned to her that I had not worn lipstick for a long time.

These personal touches have gone a long way in making the scariest time into something special.

Thank you all

I am not a lover of dentists as are quite a number of people, I know from the moment I entered Quayside I had made the right decision. The welcoming staff, so friendly and helpful and Peter who gave me loads of support and re-assurance. I have never felt better. I have grown in confidence and my self –esteem has been boosted. At the age of 62 I feel absolutely fantastic about my teeth now and would recommend Quayside Dental to anyone, I wish I had done it sooner!

Linda from L/Derry
For years I tolerated dentures falling out every time I had something to eat, having to remove them and put them in my bag rather suffer the embarrassment of people seeing them fall out of my mouth. I can smile now because I am not conscious of people knowing I’ve got false teeth. I am extremely happy with my new teeth and would not hesitate in recommending Quayside, I felt very comfortable every time I visited the surgery by a team who were always courteous and friendly.
Celia from Greencastle, Donegal

No more embarrassing episodes with plates moving and breaking. I can eat apples whilst walking, with no knife required to slice it up first.

There was a bit of pain and some discomfort but not anywhere near as much as I expected. Local anaesthetic and follow up painkillers were adequate to deal with this and I never needed to take more than a day out of work at any stage.

I think it was money well spent and I wish I could have done this year ago.

Derek from Derry
I had problem teeth and an awkward bite, a friend recommended Peter at Quayside Dental to me to see if he could help. Peter provided an excellent consultation in which I was able to say that I wanted as natural look as possible. As you can see I am more than pleased with the results and I am now smiling more than I ever did in my life and enjoying it ! I am no longer self conscious of my teeth when talking, smiling and laughing. I can whole heartedly recommend Peter and his team at Quayside!

If you have any questions, or have any problems with your dental implants, please contact Laura or another member of the team on (028) 71266000.

To help you look after your new dental implants, we have provided the following after care instructions:

As with any dental procedure carried out under anaesthetic, to avoid causing injury to your tongue, cheeks and lips, you should be careful when chewing and avoid hot food and drink until the numbness has worn off.

You will be provided with medication following your procedure along with written instructions.  If you have a reaction to the medication, contact the practice for advice. If this occurs out of hours please contact your doctor.

Avoid strenuous exercise (e.g. sports, heavy lifting etc.) as this can cause bleeding around the dental implant. You should rest for the remainder of the day as much as possible.

Avoid any excessive pressure onto the area were the dental implant/s has been placed. You should have a reasonably soft and nutritious diet for the first two weeks.

Make sure you drink enough water. You can apply Vaseline to the corners of your mouth also. Use the mouthwash provided. Avoid brushing the area in which the implant was placed but brush the rest of your teeth as normal. After the first three weeks you can resume normal cleaning around the dental implant. A high standard of oral hygiene is essential in maintaining the health of your implant and regular hygienist visits are also a must.

Smoking & Alcohol

Avoid these for two weeks following placement of your Dental Implant/s as this can slow down the healing process.
